Bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea (L.) Verdc.) is an indigenous African legume, where it is the third most important legume in terms of consumption and socioeconomic impact in semi-arid Africa behind peanut (Arachis hypogaea) and cowpea (Vigna unguiculata). The crop makes few demands on the soil, and is known to be drought tolerant and relatively disease free.
